The World's 27 Million Dirtiest Secrets

The first chapter that I have chosen to explore is Chapter 12: Sexuality. This chapter discusses many topics including sex & culture, contemporary sexual attitudes & behavior, and sex & social issues. The topic that I have chosen to focus on is the international sex trades. Today, millions of lives around the world are held in bondage, many of them in the world of sexual trafficking. More children, women and men are held in slavery right now than over the course of the entire trans-Atlantic slave trade. Nearly 2 million children are subjugated in the commercial sex industry. Sex is marketed in an international marketplace, and sex slaves are used to promote tourism, cater to business and military men, and support a huge industry of nightclubs, massage parlors, and teahouses. (Anderson, 286). While this is a huge international issue, I think it would come as a surprise to people that it is happening in the United States. I have chosen this topic in hopes to increase awareness and hopefully inspire people to provoke change.

Sex trafficking only happens over seas right? Check out this article on the violence and control that pimps and sex traffickers exercised on their victims right in our backyard. The pimp’s greatest marketing tool?  According to Tina Frundt, a former trafficking victim, it’s the media.

CALL + RESPONSE

Would you rather watch a movie about the world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets? CALL + RESPONSE is a documentary film that goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India.  Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West and Madeleine Albright and critically acclaimed artists including Cold War Kids and Natasha Bedingfield move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it. Check out the trailer...

This article released by the FBI discusses the problem of human sex trafficking on international, national and local scales and indicators of sex trafficking.

I really believe in the International Justice Mission’s vision and goals, their website is a great resource to learn more about the injustice of human trafficking and an awesome way to get involved in finding justice for the oppressed.

Hey There

Welcome! The name’s Veronica.  I am a full time student studying Interior Design and Architecture.  I am also heavily involved in the University Dance Department...P.S.: You are cordially invited to Dancers Drummers Dreamers in March! I'm graduating from university this spring, but I'm not too worried about it.  I am a total dork, I love to dance, drink coffee, and sing whether it sounds good or not.  This little blog is for my sociology class and is a string off my personal blog Simply Vero (http://simply-vero.blogspot.com/). I am particularly interested in relationships between people and how they affect us physically, mentally, and emotionally. We shall see what come of this. Enjoy!
